Our Philosophy
The Chemistry department aims to provide a high quality education for all its students. This embraces the need to afford every student the opportunity to achieve their maximum potential in public examinations at GCSE and A level. In addition to this it encompasses the development of competence in all aspects of the subject, including processing skills.
As the department moves towards achieving its aims, a variety of teaching strategies are used and learning experiences encountered by students. In this way it is hoped that the subject is made relevant, interesting, stimulating and enjoyable. This includes a strong emphasis on practical skills and their development. It is believed that practical skills are central to achieving competency in this subject at school level and beyond.
In addition to this the department seeks to develop the scientific understanding of its students so that they become scientifically literate citizens in the modern world. It is hoped that our students will exercise this scientific literacy in making responsible decisions in their future lives and careers. Such a task is not solely related to knowledge, but requires that the department develop the skills of students so that they may become critical, analytical and able to foresee the consequences of their actions.
